Ingredients

Scale
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk (warmed)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened) for filling
  • ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened) for frosting
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 24 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix warmed milk, melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla extract before combining with dry ingredients.
  3. Gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in an oiled bowl to rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  6. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread the filling evenly, add chocolate chips if desired, roll tightly into a log, and slice into 12 pieces.
  7. Let rolls rise again for 30 minutes in a greased baking dish before baking at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. For frosting: Beat cream cheese and softened butter until smooth; gradually mix in powdered sugar and milk to achieve desired consistency.
  9. Frost warm rolls before serving.
